Here is what I read in a Walt Disney biography. I'm not sure of the exact daietls, but it happened something like this. Walt Disney was still early in his animating career. He needed a character to use, so he tried to get the rights to use some rabbit guy that was popular back then, but the company didn't let him. On the train ride back home, he needed a new character, and fast. So he came up with Mortimer Mouse. He went home and told his wife about it. She thought that Mortimer wasn't a very friendly name. She suggested Mickey, and Walt liked it. And that's how he came up with Mickey.
